Beverley Racecourse
Beverley is a flat-only racecourse in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about a mile from the centre of the market town. Racing on the nearby Westwood Pasture was formalised when the Jockey Club was founded in 1752, and the first grandstand was built in 1767 at a cost of £1,000 — funded by the sale of 300 silver lifetime admission tickets. Between 1915 and 1920 the course was commandeered as an airfield, first by the Royal Flying Corps and then the Royal Air Force.
The main track is right-handed and just over a mile and three furlongs round, broadly oval in shape. Most of the course is relatively flat but the ground drops on the penultimate bend before rising steadily through the final two and a half furlongs — the stiffest section of the track. The bends are fairly tight, particularly the turn into the back straight. The five-furlong course, used for both the Hilary Needler and the Beverley Bullet, has a dog-leg to the right and is uphill throughout. It is one of the most testing sprint tracks in the country.

Key Races at Beverley
The two biggest races are both five-furlong sprints. The Hilary Needler Trophy is a race for two-year-old fillies in May and has produced some smart winners — Attraction took this in 2003 before going on to win the 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas the following year. The Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes is a Listed race for three-year-olds and upwards, run in late August or early September. It is the richest race at the track and regularly draws proven sprinters from Group company. Borderlescott, a dual Nunthorpe Stakes winner, won the Bullet at the age of ten in 2012.
There is also a Two Year Old Trophy over five furlongs for colts and geldings, and the Charlie Wood Stakes over a mile and four furlongs in mid-summer. Ladies' Day in mid-August is the best-attended fixture of the season. One local favourite is the Rapid Lad Handicap — named after a horse who won twelve races at the course between 1983 and 1989 and who now has a bar named in his honour at the racecourse.
What to Look for When Betting at Beverley
Beverley has the most pronounced draw bias of any racecourse in Britain over five furlongs. Horses drawn low, towards the inside rail, hold a significant advantage for two reasons: the right-hand dog-leg means those on the outside cover more ground, and wider-drawn runners start at a lower point on the hill, racing uphill on a camber that slopes away from them. It is a double disadvantage and the statistics bear it out consistently.

The uphill finish is a factor at every distance. Front-runners who look to have a race won at the furlong pole can be caught in the closing stages if they lack genuine stamina. Soft ground amplifies the effect — the low-lying areas of the course become testing after prolonged rain, making the last two furlongs even more demanding. Beverley can ride much stiffer than it looks on paper when the ground is against you.
The tight bends suit handy, nimble types who can hold their position through the turns. Big-striding gallopers who need space and a long straight are less effective here than at open, galloping courses like York.
