About Newbury Racecourse
Newbury is a premier dual-purpose racecourse in Berkshire, situated close to the major training centre of Lambourn. It stages both flat and National Hunt racing on turf throughout the year, with up to 31 fixtures annually.
The round course is a left-handed oval of approximately one mile and seven furlongs with wide, sweeping bends and a long run-in of around five furlongs on the flat side. There is also a separate straight mile used for flat races up to that distance, with slight undulations along its length. No significant draw bias has been recorded at Newbury — it is widely regarded as one of the fairest tracks in Britain.
The galloping nature of the course suits horses that stay their trip well. Long straights and easy turns allow hold-up horses time to organise a challenge, while front-runners can exploit the generous galloping room without being squeezed on tight bends. Over jumps, the fences are stiff and provide a thorough examination of a chaser's jumping ability.

Key Races at Newbury
Newbury hosts headline races under both codes, and several serve as important trials for the spring Festivals.
Flat: The Lockinge Stakes is the only Group 1 flat race at Newbury, contested over one mile and forming part of the British Champions Series. The spring programme includes two valuable Classic trials — the Greenham Stakes for colts and the Fred Darling Stakes for fillies — both run over seven furlongs in April. Later in the season, the Hungerford Stakes (Group 2, seven furlongs) in August and the Mill Reef Stakes (Group 2, six furlongs for two-year-olds) in September are among the most competitive races in their categories. The Super Sprint, a sales-restricted two-year-old sprint, adds further depth to the summer card.
National Hunt: The feature handicap chase over three miles and two furlongs in late November — historically one of the most prestigious long-distance handicaps in the calendar — regularly attracts Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders. The Challow Novices' Hurdle in December is Newbury's only Grade 1 race over jumps and a key pointer towards the spring novice hurdle scene. In February, the feature handicap hurdle draws large, competitive fields and is one of the standout betting races of the National Hunt season. Newbury also stages important trials including a Gold Cup trial chase and a Champion Chase trial, both run on the same February card.

Newbury's wide, galloping layout tends to produce fair results and rewards horses with genuine stamina for the distance.
