Chester Racecourse — known as The Roodee — sits on the banks of the River Dee in Cheshire and holds a distinction no other racing venue can match: it is the oldest racecourse still in operation anywhere in the world, officially recognised by Guinness World Records. Racing was first staged here in 1539, replacing a traditional Shrove Tuesday football match that had been deemed too violent. The name "Roodee" comes from the Saxon "rood" (cross) and Norse "eye" (island), referring to a stone cross that once stood at the centre of the site.
The track is a left-handed turf circuit of just over one mile, almost circular in shape, meaning the field is nearly always on the turn. The run-in is approximately 239 yards — one of the shortest in British flat racing — and the tight, continuous bends make Chester one of the most demanding tests of a horse's adaptability in the country. The ancient Roman city walls that border the eastern side of the course have provided spectators with a natural grandstand for centuries and remain one of the most recognisable features of a day's racing here. The Huxley Stakes (Group 2, one mile and two and a half furlongs) is the highest-graded race staged at Chester, open to horses aged four and upwards. The Ormonde Stakes (Group 3, one mile and five furlongs) provides a longer test for middle-distance stayers, while the Dee Stakes (Listed, one mile and two furlongs) offers another trial for Derby-bound three-year-olds.
